Narayana Murthy's return brings wary cheers to Infoscions

A majority of Infosys employees are extremely elated about NRN's comeback, but a significant number of them feel that it might be a little too late

BANGALORE, INDIA: Ten days into the return of Infosys co-founder, N.R. Narayana Murthy, as executive chairman of the company, most of the employees seem upbeat over their organization's reversal of fortunes.

"It's very encouraging to know that NRN is back," beams a group project manager with Infosys, adding, "When he was at the helm earlier, Global Delivery Model was followed and that is when we were successful. Nowadays, with the Agile methodology, clients want our (human) resources to work onsite, which may or may not turn out to be fully productive. Under the current circumstances, it's none other than NRN, who can bail Infosys out of the sluggish scenario."

There are many others who feel that it is a matter of pride that Murthy is back in the company. A senior software engineer says that it would help improve the morale of thousands of employees, who look up to him as their idol and role model.

"He has an aura about him and we all know what he is capable of. He is someone, who people can get inspired by and he has always led the company by example," observes a technology analyst, who has been with the company since 2005.

A project manager with Infosys feels that since the company has gone to the extent of bringing Murthy back, they are hoping that he will come out with flying colors. "As it is, the positive effects of his return are evident from the performances of Infosys stock over the past few days and the overall morale of the employees."

A few, however, point out that it might be a bit too late to do damage control. "Although it has been only around two years since Murthy retired, the company has undergone so many changes during the time, including the implementation of Infy 3.0 strategy. So, it will take more than just introducing new policies; it is also important to roll back some policies that failed to produce desired results," says a senior-level employee.

It is another question whether he would be willing to scrap any measures or initiatives taken up by the current dispensation, says a software engineer, adding that Murthy is not known to rub his own people the wrong way.
