How to Jailbreak, Root your smartphoneThere is no denying the fact that we’re seeing explosive growth in smartphones both in terms of features and specifications. As clichéd as it may sound, it’s the absolute truth. Hell, we even have a satellite powered by an Android smartphone (Google Nexus One) orbiting around the earth which, in fact, was launched by our very own ISRO. The crux of the matter is that we have a lot of computing power in our palms but it goes largely untapped due to the restrictions placed by the device manufacturers, carriers and the stock versions of the operating systems.

The methods discussed in the following pages will not only help you extract the maximum performance and unlock advance features on your latest smartphone but also provide a fresh breath of air to older devices making them more usable. In this story, we’ll cover all the dominant mobile platforms in the market, detailing how to jailbreak/root the devices. The hacks mentioned here will allow you to sideload, i.e. install third-party apps on your device, install a custom/modified ROM on the device and give you a super-user access to the system which will enable you to tweak the innards of the device.

Jailbreaking/rooting your phone is not illegal as long as it is limited to non-copyright infringement purposes, but jail-breaking/rooting your phone will void your device’s manufacturer warranty so proceed with extreme caution.

Before trying out any method mentioned in this pages make sure that you create a full backup of your phone backup using the method(s) mentioned for each OS. Please make sure is that you follow all the instructions provided here or the guides to which links are provided for a particular model or device to the tee. Not doing so can lead to extremely dire consequences.

ANDROID

Android is much more relaxed as compared to other platforms when it comes to allowing the user to install third-party apps which is perhaps the main reason for rooting/jailbreaking other mobile platforms. Rooting is the first step in extending the functionality that your phone has to offer – wireless tethering for older phones, custom ROMs, CPU overclocking and so on. Rooting in Android is very much akin to running a program as an administrator in Windows or running a program with the sudo command in *nix systems.
Backup

All your contacts, mail, calendar and other Google account specific data will be already in sync with Google’s servers, so you need not worry about that. As far as the system data, apps and app data is concerned there are two ways to go about taking a backup – one of them is using Titanium Backup and the other is using ADB (Android Debug Bridge). The problem with the first method is that, you need your phone to be rooted to use Titanium Backup as it requires root permissions, and brings into existence the classic chicken and egg problem. Titanium Backup is useful once you’ve rooted your phone and you plan on installing a custom ROM. You’d want to make sure that all your installed applications, settings and the original firmware are available to you in case you run into any problems. Another advise here is to go for a Nandroid backup provided by the Clockwork Recovery Mod or your own custom ROM which saves an entire image of the device to the disk for future use.

For Android 4.0 and upwards you can use the ADB backup. Just download HoloBackup, a GUI wrapper for conducting the backup, from its homepage. Once you get the app running , hit “Backup all without system apps” and you’re set. One problem here is that this functionality doesn’t exist for Android 2.3 or lower, your best bet would be use an application like MyBackup Pro to backup your other data and use Astro file manager to copy your application APKs to a safe location.

Rooting

The complication for Android is that there are a large variety of phones available in the market today. Now, while some methods do work for a very large cross section of handsets, there is no universal one-size-fits-all rooting solution for every phone out there. We’ll start with the one tool that is able to root a lot of models, especially the older ones - SuperOneClick. The catch is that it may or may not work for your phone, so you’ll have to dig in a bit deeper especially for older phones as they have their own little quirks.

Download SuperOneClick from its download site and extract the downloaded zip file. On your phone make sure that USB Debugging is enabled under the settings and then connect the phone to your PC. The next step is very important, make sure your SD card is not mounted before proceeding. Once your phone is detected by SuperOneClick click on “Root” to begin the rooting process and wait for it to complete. That’s it! once the process completes your phone will be rooted and then you can proceed to the post-rooting section of the guide. In case you face any problem, search the SuperOneClick support thread on XDA Developers for people having same problems as you.

This app is known not to work with the following phone. You can use unrevoked.com instead to circumvent the NAND lock used by these phone.

SuperOneClick in action
One thing to take note of here is that this may not be the only method which roots your phone there may be multiple methods out there to root your phone. You’ll have to find the one that suits you the best. For example, all phones from HTC released in and after 2011 are allowed to unlock their bootloader by HTC itself, the only step you need to perform after this is to flash a custom ROM to your device to get the root access. Now other methods may exist which may do this for your phone in one click, it’s entirely up to your discretion to select the method that you’re comfortable with.

You’ll find that nearly all links point to XDA Forums. It is infact the Mecca of smartphone hacking, rooting and development. Nearly all the developers congregate and collaborate, thus making this rooting toolkits and apps possible. Whenever in doubt just head over to XDA Developers forums, you’ll find that someone usually has had the exactly the same problem as you, as in all probabilities you’ll find an excellent solution there.

Post Rooting

Once you’ve rooted your phone, it’ll open up a host of hidden features on your phone. For starters, you’ll be able to flash custom ROMs on your phone like ParanoidAndroid, LiquidSmooth, Android Open Kang Project, Cyanogenmod 10, Xylon to name a few. You’ll find a host of threads online which deal with installing/flashing these ROMs on your phone after rooting. You’ll also be able to install applications  which need root access like Titanium Explorer, ES File Explorer, ROM Manager, CPU Master for overclocking and so on. There is this excellent thread at StackExchange which details what are the possibilities after rooting your phone.

iOS

Hacking your iOS device on the other hand, is called, jailbreaking. In an ecosystem which is under tight control by the iron-fists of the Cupertino-based giant, jailbreaking allows the user to install a modified operating system by unlocking the bootloader, sideloading third party apps apart from the app store and provide root permissions to the user.

Backup

Backing up your iPhone is quite straightforward. You could either have your phone synced with iCloud or just manually create a backup from iTunes by right-click on your phone icon and clicking on backup, an advantage of doing it this way is that you can restore it much faster. If you’re upgrading from a jailbroken phone, make sure that you backup your Cydia apps separately so they can be easily restored after you’ve upgraded+jailbroken your phone.

You can backup your Cydia apps by downloading OpenBackup from Cydia’s official repositories. The app is quite easy to operate, just open the app and hit the Backup button, this backs up your Cydia data to either iCloud or iTunes. You also get a local copy if you want to manually save the backup file to your computer hard drive. You’ll find the backup file at private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/OpenBackupFiles, you can use iFunBox to copy the files to your hardrive.

Rooting

As opposed to Android there are not a lot of methods available for cracking your iPhone (in fact this works for any iDevice, but we’ll be limiting our discussion to the iPhones here), in fact there are a very limited set of methods available for you to jailbreak your iPhone. The table below details the various methods available for the different versions of the phone at different operating system versions.

The highlighted jailbreaks are tethered jailbreaks, i.e. you need to plug in the phone at every restart so that the jailbreak can be loaded which patches the kernel in real time. This might sound quite cumbersome but it’s the only way to go about doing it for the older versions of the operating systems. If you update your phone now, you will be updated to iOS 6.1.3 and you won’t be able to downgrade to 6.1.2 or lower so if you’ve not updated your phone you’re still in luck, as you’ll still be able to use evasi0n or the respective jailbreaking tool for your version of operating system. These jailbreak tools are incredibly easy to operate. For e.g. consider, evasi0n, just grab the latest zip file from the tool’s download page and extract the file. Make sure that you remove the lock screen password before proceeding and avoid all iTunes related tasks when evasi0n is running. In case the process freezes at any time it is safe to restart the program and reboot the device to try the process again. To jailbreak your device just run evasi0n and click on the jailbreak button and the process will begin. Your phone will restart a couple of times during the process, be patient. Eventually, the process will run it’s course and you’ll be able to tap on the exit button. The phone will restart and Voila! you’ve just jailbroken your iPhone.

Both the other apps function in a similar way, whenever in doubt visit the forums on the respective app’s pages you’re bound to get help there. Make sure that you find the exact version of your firmware and use the recommended jailbreaking tool from the table above.

Post Jailbreaking

You’ll now have an access to an amazing set of features which will let you modify the phone in some very interesting ways, the first of which being Cydia. This amazing little app will allow you download a host of 3rd party apps hosted on both Cydia’s own and other repositories. You’ll be able to personalize the menu and it’s appearance along with the background and lock screen images. Advance task switcher, mods which let you run tasks in background, folder enhancer, ssh and gcc are just some of the apps which form the tip of the iceberg. You can get quite an interesting list compiled by The Big Boss, it lists some of the apps mentioned here and many more interesting ones which can be installed once you’ve jailbroken your phone.

WINDOWS PHONE

Rooting a Windows phone is more tricky compared to it’s cousins. Root/unlock in Windows phone comes in three flavours:

Developer Unlock

This allows you to sideload third-party apps in your phone. The number is restricted to 10 and you need to register yourself at AppHub @ $99/year to unlock your phone. There is also a student account which allows you to side load up to three apps.

Interop Unlock

A new lock was introduced with the earlier builds of WP7 Mango which required apps to have this lock for accessing device drivers and other restricted areas like the registry, root access, the file system and so on. Called the interop unlock by it’s finder Heathcliff from the XDA Developer forums, this unlock used exploits to target the vulnerabilities in some of the manufacturer specific software to unlock the phone.

Full Unlock

As of now this is only possible for first generation HTC and Samsung phones. After unlocking the bootloaders and installing custom ROMs, you need to install Full Unlock packages which patches to remove the policy checks and gives you the full access to the system. The problem here is that all apps then have the full access to your system even the bad ones.

Backup

There are two ways you can go about backing up stuff on your Windows Phone. You can either use the WP7 Easy Backup Tool or the WP7 Backup App. You can grab WP7 Easy Backup Tool from it’s download page. The process is quite straightforward and the app is laid out like a wizard to guide you through the backup process.

The app is a very clever piece of software, it uses the Zune updater tool to backup your phone. This backup can be used by Zune to restore the device when you use the "Update" option under settings. This will save everything right from the application settings to your texts inside the update. One downside is that any file changes, updates or other user specific data will not persist if it was not present at the time of the backup. Checkout the apps XDA Developers thread for the download and exact deployment instructions.

Unlocking/Rooting

Different brands, different OEMs and different versions will have their own unlocking method(s). We’ve compiled a list of brands and devices which can be unlocked in the table below. One important thing to note here is that Windows Phone 8 users will not be able to unlock their phones as there are no unlocks available which allow you to root your phone.

Another method possible is what is called policy unlock, once you manage to get an interop-unlock activated on your phone you can sideload WP7 Root Tools into your phone and then use the bundled exploits to attempt a full unlock of the phone. You can grab the latest copy of the WP7 Root Tools from its download page. You’ll also need the Windows Phone SDK to deploy the app file (.xap) to the phone. You’ll find the deployment program at the location C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SDKsWindows Phonev8.0ToolsXAP Deployment. You can either use this or XAPDeployX which can be downloaded from its XDA Developers thread. Mindwell this will only work once you’ve interop-unlocked the phone or on the 1st generation Windows phones with developer unlock.
Post Unlock/Rooting
A host of brilliant applications are made available once you’ve unlocked your phone. Starting with jaxbot’s WPH Tweaks, which enables you to make a lot of much needed tweaks to the OS. Other applications include new themes, dynamic backgrounds, lock screen widgets, orientation lock, file explorer, screen capture, certificate installer and so on.

Samsung may have cheated to get good smartphone benchmark scores on Galaxy S4
Samsung could have possibly tweaked its Exynos 5 Octa processor to perform better when running select benchmarks, according to a forum member on Beyond 3D and AnandTech. Nebuchadnezzar, the Beyond 3D forum member, noticed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 was pushing its GPU to a clock speed of 532 MHz when running whitelisted benchmarks such as the old GL Bench app but would max out at 480 MHz on non-whitelisted apps such as the new GFXBench benchmark. What this means is that the S4 delivers more power than usual when running benchmarks but throttles down the GPU to achieve better battery life on other apps, suggesting that the benchmark results of the Galaxy S4 do not accurately represent real-world performance.

Nebuchadnezzar’s findings were confirmed by AnandTech as well, who also tested if the Galaxy S4’s Exynos CPU was also tweaked to deliver better results on recognized benchmarks. They found that it was and that when running older whitelisted benchmarks such as GLBench 2.5.1, AnTuTu, Quadrant, Linpack and Benchmark Pi, the processor would always be at max power with the Cortex A15 cores consistently at 1.2GHz, irrespective of what load the benchmarks put on the device. However, when the non-whitelisted GFXBench 2.7.0 was run, the S4 switched over to the more economical Cortex A7 cores.

AnandTech also found something more interesting that makes all of the above look like it was deliberately done by Samsung. While digging around in the Galaxy S4’s system files, AnandTech came across the TwDVFSApp.apk file responsible for changing the processor’s core clock speeds. Opening the APK file in a hex editor revealed a string titled ‘BenchmarkBooster’ and a list of benchmark names that included all of the ones mentioned above. This proves, almost conclusively, that Samsung intended to make the Galaxy S4 perform better during benchmarks than it would when running anything else.

At the end of the day, there is very little chance that the performance tweaking affects you, if you own a Galaxy S4. You won’t really find any performance shortfalls when using the phone on a day to day basis. However, by tweaking the phone’s processor to work in a non-regular manner, Samsung clearly wanted to taint benchmark scores in reviews in order to make the Galaxy S4 look better than its competition. We’ve always maintained in our smartphone reviews that synthetic benchmark numbers do not signify real-world performance and have always made it a point to score a smartphone based on real-world performance as well (we test that by running a whole bunch of popular games, running HD videos and using the phone as our primary device for a couple of days).

By going out of its way to manipulate benchmark scores, Samsung has further highlighted the drawbacks of using synthetic benchmarks. Samsung has also shown how insecure it is with respect to the Galaxy S4 and we’re sure many smartphone users will be disappointed that the company had to resort to tricks to paint its flagship phone in a better light.

MediaTek reveals world's first 'true octa-core' mobile SoC

MediaTek reveals world's first 'true octa-core' mobile SoCMediaTek just got done announcing their new quad-core processor running ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, and today, we’re getting word of an unnamed octa-core processor from the Taiwanese manufacturer. However the company’s put its own twist onto the octa-core race, calling out Samsung, the maker of the Exynos 5 Octa.

MediaTek claims that unlike the competition, which does have eight processing cores, but uses only four, the octa-core processor from the company uses all eight processing cores, making it the first true octa-core processor. The company claims that their new SoC will be able to deliver better multimedia content playback, better gaming and an overall better user experience without letting the battery take a hit.

Currently, Samsung offers the Exynos 5 Octa, which is an eight core SoC built on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture featuring four A15 core and four A7 cores. In the current design, at any given time, only one of 2 core clusters can operate, that is, either the four A15 cores work or the four A7s. So, while the specs may technically be correct in boasting 8 cores, the reality is that at any given time, you only get quad-core performance.

MediaTek is aiming to address that with their new octa-core processor, which is the first processor to operate all eight cores simultaneously. At the moment, MediaTek has not announced when this processor will be available, and neither have they revealed any juicy details such as the clockspeed range or the die size. We can only hope that MediaTek releases not just the details about the processor but the processor itself soon!

Instagram disables photos via a third-party Windows Phone client

Instagram is one of many major apps missing on Windows Phone platform. WP users have so far used third party clients to post to the image sharing service. But now, Instagram is taking away this facility from WP users is deleting their photos after they are uploaded via a third party client.
As reported by The Verge, users of Instance, a third-party Instagram client, are unable to post photos as well as the URLs to the file.

Instagram has confirmed it has made some changes to its APIs, though not targeted at a particular platform or app. “We recently made an update to the systems that we use to fight spam to help prevent future attacks and increase security. As part of this, applications accessing Instagram against the terms of our API may also be affected. This update does not specifically target any particular app or platform,” says Instagram in a statement.
Earlier, Instance developer Daniel Gary told The Verge that Instagram may be "detecting when photos are not uploading via the official app." “It’s their servers, their service. What I was doing was not approved by them and was using their private API," he added, noting he did not blame Facebook for blocking the app.

He added that Google's mission has always been to make search into an ideal assistant: a search engine that understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you need. The recent improvements to Google Search have drawn the company closer to that vision.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra launched in India for Rs. 46,990; sports 6.4-in displaySony launched the Xperia Z Ultra phablet in India for Rs. 46,990 today at an event held in New Delhi. The Xperia phablet wields a 6.4-inch display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and 344 ppi pixel density. Sony further revealed that the large screened smartphone will be hitting store shelves in India from August 2 and will be available in multiple colours including Black, White and Purple.

In spite of its large size, the Xperia Z Ultra is relatively slim at 6.5 mm and weighs about 212 grams. Like the preceding Xperia Z smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra is IP57 certified to be dust and water proof and also water resistant up to a depth of 1 metre and up to 30 minutes. The Xperia also boasts of Triluminos display technology which Sony claims results in colours looking rich and natural. The Xperia Z Ultra supports microSD cards up to 64GB and comes with internal storage of 16GB. The phablet is powered by 2GB of RAM, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. It supports all popular connectivity features including 3G, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi Hotspot, DLNA and Bluetooth 4.0.

Imaging on the Xperia Z Ultra is taken care of by an 8MP Exmor RS camera that can also shoot 1080p videos at 30fps. The Xperia also has a front-facing 2MP camera for video chats. Finally, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and a Lithium Ion battery rated at 3050 mAh with the ability to provide 16 hours of continuous talktime on 3G.

Indian buyers of the Xperia Z Ultra will get free access to the BigFlix movie streaming app for a month and the full version of Asphalt 7 racing game.

Safety on the road: Best GPS devices for your car

Yes, it is normal to think of maps and voice based navigation, whenever you think about a GPS device. However, in the current scenario, the device with its abilities, also brings in a massive safety aspect for the occupants of the vehicle. There are times when all of us end up in an area of the city that we aren’t well versed with, and it becomes important to ask for directions. How We Tested
Before we embarked on testing the GPS devices for this comparison test, we set a standard testing base for all the devices. Since this device cannot be tested in a test centre environment indoors and has to be done outdoors, we had to ensure that the conditions were the same for all devices. Which is why, all the benchmark tests were done on the same day, which made it rather hectic, but was done so that the weather (clouds, etc.) also doesn’t have any impact on the performance of an individual device.
Same Routes For All
To ensure this, we charted out two test routes in Delhi/NCR, which covered a heady mix of colony roads, main roads and National Highways, and some popular points of Interest like popular restaurants. The idea was to see how the maps guide us on the popular main roads, and how precise are they on the colony roads with address search, which to someone who is clueless, is usually a confusing spaghetti of tarmac!
Comparing the Maps & Navigation
Navigation devices of different brands have their own unique package, completely not related to the other. Their mapping is done in a different way, and the maps themselves look very different. Navigation quality and even the ability to re-route a journey if need be need comparison. Running all maps on the same route allows us to compare the navigation quality and precision.
Same Car, Same Driver, Same Driving Style
To keep everything constant, we used the same car, with the same driver. Some of these devices have the Eco feature - calculate fuel average etc., and a standard driving style helps compare the accuracy if need be. We did not want even a slight difference in engine displacement to have a bearing on the results! Keeping all elements constant will help with the precise results.

  • Navigation quality: We rate the quality of navigation offered by each device, based on the precision on both the pre-set test routes.
  • Voice navigation: We rate all devices on the quality of voice navigation, the amount of options available for language and how sweetly (or harshly!) the device tells us to take a right turn in 1.2kms!
  • Display & Sound quality: Two critical features on a navigation device. If you cannot see the map clearly and quickly while driving, or the audio isn't clear enough, then what is the point? We rate these features based on quality.
  • Startup time: Just like most devices, it is important for a navigation device to start up quickly. More points awarded to the devices that take lesser time to start up and be ready for action.
  • GPS lock time: This is the final piece of the jigsaw. Once the GPS is locked on, after a complete boot, you can input your destination and be on the way. Again, the quicker devices score more points.
It’s a Guide, Not a Command!
As a rule, GPS navigators are meant to be used as a helpful guide, but keep your concentration on the road and the driving. Ideally, these devices are meant for use as a guide, and their guidance isn’t something etched in stone, and neither will you get any rap on your knuckles for not following the direction guidance to the last letter. Clearly, some people believe it is the word of God, or something like that. Which is why we regularly hear stories of people driving into water bodies or getting their vehicle stuck on the edge of a cliff – “just because the GPS navigator told us to” isn’t an excuse that doesn’t sound sensible enough. Particularly when you have a car being fished out of a canal. Yes, the quality of mapping has improved considerably over the last 12 months, something that we have experienced since our previous GPS comparison test in the summer of 2012. But, there is always the chance of a mapping error, or a change in the topography that the map may not yet reflect. Always, as a rule, only listen to the navigators’ directions while driving, and only look at it when you the vehicle is stationary.

Map Performance
This is what a GPS device is purchased for, and this is the most critical aspect. We tested all devices in accordance with our test pattern, and here are our test results:
Garmin: Last year, Garmin's nuvi 2565LM was by far the best navigation device as far as map clarity and navigation precision is concerned. This time around, the updated nuvi 2568LM just takes the game further. The navigation quality is very good, be it on the main roads, a national highway or roads inside a colony. The lane guidance feature really works well on main roads, so much so that it will periodically guide you on which lane to stay in even if you are going straight for the next 2-3kms. Navigation is precise – the nuvi 2568LM was the closest to the actual destination when it announced “you have reached your destination”, in comparison to all other navigators. Impressive set of features are carried forward as is, but in a more streamlined UI - fuel average calculator, trends to guess where you may be going and little bits like currency converter, calculator, Bluetooth for phone calls, ability to customize menu. The UI is easy to navigate, thanks to a heady mix of big icons and clear text. This device is compatible with the rear parking camera, and Garmin packs in lifetime map updates with the device.
MapmyIndia's Aura 3D Maps are still a class apart, first seen on the Zx250
MapmyIndia: While MapmyIndia's maps look different on different devices, the navigation quality is very similar. The maps are probably the most detailed, and most devices (except the basic VX140s Premium) offer 3D Maps as well. The Zx250 still has the most exciting Aura maps - 3D landmarks, 3D buildings and even elevation changes where applicable. Throughout the range, the navigation precision is the same, thanks to the same set of basic maps. Voice navigation does see some variation in terms of clarity and customization options, mostly dependent on the device. The Vx140s Premium does not have 3D Maps, but the rest of the maps are the same. The Australian voice guidance is more precise when it comes to turns - can distinguish between 90 degree turns and 140 degree fork turns and guides you accordingly - turn left or turn slightly left. Nice little addition that is very much appreciated. The Zx250 is also compatible with a reverse parking sensor camera, and can act as a FM transmitter and also handle mobile calls via Bluetooth and has 2GB of internal memory. But, it is good to see that the Lx340 has the 3D Maps that till now were reserved for more expensive devices only. For a device that costs less than Rs. 10,000, that is indeed a huge value add.
TomTom Via: We just love these TomTom devices, and while these maps aren’t 3D, they still look gorgeous and very functional. They are the most matter to fact navigators in this entire bunch. Each VIA series navigator just goes about doing what it is supposed to do, in a very precise fashion. German precision, almost! Switch on any of the VIA devices, and it opens up straight on the Maps application. And straightaway, you are good to go. Extremely quick GPS lock times help in that motive as well. Navigation quality is at par with what Garmin offers. But, there were a couple of instances on our test runs when the maps got a tad confused, and had to re-lock the GPS signal and recalculate the trip. The amazingly clean UI is easy to navigate even for a newbie. Lots of options and settings available, but critically, all of them are the second layer, behind the maps. The fact that I don’t have to tap on a map app to start the navigation is a huge bonus. Voice direction is at par with MapMyIndia devices, which is a huge positive. The display changes orientation very smoothly, depending on how you have placed the device, something that most other devices don’t do. Next step would be to get 3D Maps on board, even if only for the visual element.
Primo GPS: The best thing that Primo GPS could have done for their navigation devices was to shift away from SatGuide maps, and that is exactly what they did. The switch to MapmyIndia maps puts the navigation quality at par with the other devices. The positive impact that has had on the overall usability and experience is pretty much unmatched. Essentially, once mounted on the windshield and navigating, you cannot really tell the difference between the Primo devices and the MapmyIndia VX140s just by looking at the screen. Across all the tests, the Primo devices performed well above expectations, and we must complement them for the good work done in the last 12 months.
The Design: Masterpiece on your dash?
In this section, we take a look at how these GPS devices are built, and the other functionality aspects. The devices are arranged in price ascending order.
The SatGuide 4.3 Navi with Entertainment is the least expensive device among all that we are testing here. The combination of black and silver around the bezel looks very classy. Most of the ports are on the left side spine - 3.5mm, microSD slot, and the Mini USB port. Flip the device over, and a black finish that has a tad bit of self-imprint on it will greet you. The speaker is clearly visible on the bottom left, and on that very edge is the stylus. However, it takes considerable effort to take out the stylus, since the chamber seems a little too snuggly fit for it. This navigator seems well-put together overall, and definitely looks a lot more expensive than it actually is.
The Primo GPS PG411G does have its good and bad points. It is very well built, and has a rather compact look to it, thanks to the thinner frame above the display. The build quality is quite solid, and so is the windshield mount. However, the fact that the finish on the navigator is completely in glossy black colour does mean it’ll be prone to scratches and visible dust. All connectors and slots are placed on the left spine, assuming you are looking at the navigator head on, and there is a bevelled design. The windshield mount also packs in a stylus, something that is unique to this GPS device. Very useful to use on a resistive touchscreen.
MapMyIndia has given the Lx430 the distinct identity its higher end devices also have, complete with the soft feel finish. The bevelled design means the Lx340 looks thinner than it actually is. Good to look at and touch, but there are some rough edges. If you aren’t careful while detaching the windshield mount, there is a visible gap that opens up where the front and back panels meet. Port placement and power key position are comfortable for operation.
The three Tom Tom devices, the Via 100, Via 120 and Via 125 all look and feel exactly the same, apart from the different screen sizes. And still, this family of devices are the only ones that integrate the windshield mount on the back of the device itself, in what is something of a one piece assembly. A very neat idea, and we still urge all GPS/PND device manufacturers to consider this, even though it is now 12 months since we last mentioned this! Even in terms of port and key placements, the three TomTom devices are by far the most unique looking ones in this bunch - power key on the back panel, no ports on the sides and the memory card slot in a tiny depression on the rear panel as well. The build quality is quite good, except that it loses out on points for power key placement. Reaching behind the device is a tad uncomfortable, particularly when the integrated mount means there isn’t much gap between the glass and the device.
When you pick up the MapmyIndia Vx140s Premium, you immediately realize that you are now talking about the higher end of the price band, and the build quality reflects that. The design is clear, and the elements are not even remotely confused. True to its price tag, the Vx140s Premium feels well put together.
The Zx250 is by far the most premium navigator from MapmyIndia, and indeed among the competition. It has been around for more than a year now, yet it retains that persona and superiority. The warm grey colour finish is a tad unique, particularly when most other navigators are sporting various shades of black.
Garmin's nuvi 2565LM and the nuvi 2568LM look fairly similar, which is a good thing
The Garmin nuvi 2568LM carries forward the design elements form the nuvi 2565LM, which still remains in the market. The form factor remains exactly as is. The only minor change, look wise, is that the frame around the display now has the glossy black finish, while the rest has the soft feel finish.
The Windshield Mounts
Over and above the build quality sits a rather more important aspect of the quality of the windshield mount. 


Satguide: The windshield mounts from Satguide are a bit of a mixed bag. Setting up has an additional step, since there are two pieces that need to be joined before the navigator is snugly fit. While it is a good idea to have to have complete flexibility in terms of height and angle the device is at, in this case, the tightened screws get slightly loose after some time, particularly for the arm that handles the face angle of the navigator - after driving over some bumpy roads. While there is no risk of the devices falling off, you may need to tighten the screws every few days to ensure they haven’t loosened up.
Primo GPS: In a change from the last year’s edition, the windshield mounts on the PG411G are much better. Gone is the two part setup, instead succeeded by something that is a while piece in itself with two elbows for height and side angle adjustment. The mount also neatly houses the stylus. All in all, a very well done effort.
MapmyIndia: The mount design remains largely similar as last year. It is also a two-piece setup, and literally no chances of things going wrong, since the one place where you tighten it won’t ideally get loose. Fit the mount holder on the device. Attach the mount arm into the first part, and tighten once you have set the angle. Now attach it to the windshield! It doesn’t get lot of points, since joining the dock to the arm is a slightly time consuming process - you cannot really set an angle for it unless you use the trial and error method in the car itself.
Garmin: Probably the most solid looking mount that is quite literally a single piece one. Just dock the device on it and mount on the windshield. You really don’t need to spend any time setting it up! Furthermore, there is a mini USB, a micro USB port and a video in on the mount itself. The navigator remains very stable on this platform, even on roads that aren’t the best around.

TomTom: This is, on paper, the simplest mount of all. As we had mentioned, it is a very neat idea, and we think this is something all GPS/PND device manufacturers should consider. However, the implementation needs to be slightly improved. We say that because the devices tend to vibrate quite a bit as you drive along. Also, the TomTom devices have the habit of falling off the windshield on a bumpy road, if the suction cup is in anything less than perfect condition. However, this minimalist design means you can even install it on the dashboard, depending on the material of plastic in your car.

Best Devices to Buy: Our Picks
This is the time when we tell you which GPS navigator to buy. And to make the buying decision simpler, we have selected one from each price band.
The entry-level category: MapmyIndia Lx340
As far as this category is concerned, the Lx340 was pretty much the undisputed winner. The fact that an entry-level navigator gets 3D Maps is something that gives it major advantage over the rivals. Apart from the 3D Maps, the affordability aspect, steady performance and the good build quality also help the Lx340 emerge as the winner. This is one GPS device that has the navigation experience and quality of a higher end product.
MapmyIndia Lx340 is the best device in the sub-Rs. 10,000 price bracket
Mid-range category: Tom Tom Via 120
Between this and the MapmyIndia Vx140s Premium, the Via 125 does have the advantage of quicker device booting, significantly quicker GPS lock times and maps that are instantly ready to navigate, without distracting you with features that you may or may not use.
Tom Tom VIA 120 is the best device in category 2 (Rs. 10,001 to Rs. 15,000) and the VIA 125 is the undisputed winner in the high-end category (Rs 15001 and above)
High-end category: Tom Tom Via 125
The same reasons that gave the Via 120 the winner’s medal in the mid-range category apply here as well. It was a close call between this and the MapmyIndia Zx250, but we favoured functionality over the beauty of the 3D Aura maps. The two Garmin navigators - the 2565LM and the 2568LM are both more expensive than the Via 125.

India's average internet speed expected to improve by 50 percent

According to a report by cloud computing firm Akamai Technologies, the average internet speed is expected to jump by 40-50 per cent to 1.8 Mbps in the next 12 months. The hike comes on the back of increased investments in high-speed fiber network and affordable data plans.
India saw an average internet speed of 1.0 Mbps in the first quarter of 2012 which has increased to 1.3 Mbps in the first quarter of 2013. That is an increase of almost 0.3 Mbps, but India still remains behind 113 countries, according to Akamai Technologies Director of Products for Asia Pacific and Japan, Bruno Goveas.
The latest Akamai Technologies 'State of the Internet' report states that India has a peak speed average of 10.6 Mbps. India's average internet speed grew by more than 20% in the past year but lags behind other Asia Pacific countries like South Korea (15.7 Mbps) and Japan (10.9 Mbps). The broadband adoption rate in India still remains below 10%.
Goveas adds that in the recent months cable operators and service providers are adding high speed fiber direct to homes and are offering high speed data plans especially in Tier 1 cities. This comes on the back of users accessing high speed internet on their smartphones and service providers giving some affordable data plans to meet the demand.
"We expect growth in speeds from users in Tier II and Tier III cities as well, and not just Tier I, given the investments from telcos, and with users accessing the Internet from mobile phones," Goveas further added.
According to CISCO's Visuals Networking Index (VNI) forecast (2012-17), the number of Internet users in India will increase to 348 million by 2017, making it the fastest growth globally. The increase in internet users will be driven by smartphones and the Indian mobile data traffic will grow at 4 times faster than Indian fixed IP traffic from 2012 to 2017 constituting to 32 per cent of total IP traffic.

Quad-core smartphones under Rs. 20,000 compared: Which is the best for you?

Ever since the launch of the Micromax A116 Canvas HD we have seen a flood of budget smartphones launch that boast of quad-core processors. These devices show off some homogenous specifications and their performance is at par with each other too. If someone tells you some crazy mumbo-jumbo that one smartphone is drastically different from the other in this category, just ignore it, as most of it is salesman talk.
Let us break some myths down for you. Most of these budget quad-core smartphones run on the MediaTek MT6589 chipset or the Qualcomm S4 Play MSM8225Q chipset. There are three variants of the MediaTek MT6589 chipset – the MediaTek MT6589, MT6589M and MT6589T.
The MT6589M is clocked at 1.2GHz, has the PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU clocked at 156MHz and supports the qHD display. A smartphone running on the MT6589M chipset will support an 8MP rear camera at max with the ability to record video in 720p.
The MT6589 on the other hand too is clocked at 1.2GHz along with the PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU clocked at 286MHz. Smartphones running the MT6589 support a full HD display, up to 13MP camera with 1080p video.
Coming to the MT 6589T we have a chipset with the CPU clocked at 1.5GHz with the PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU clocked at 357MHz. It too supports a full HD display along with a 13MP rear camera with full HD video capabilities.
So, put simply, the MediaTek MT6589 powers the mid-ranged budget quad-core devices, the MT6589M powers the entry level devices (usually sub-Rs. 10,000) and we are yet to see a flood of devices (premium mid-range) using the MT 6589T chipset hit the market. One highly anticipated device running this chipset is the iberry Auxus Nuclea N1.

All the smartphones in our list run on the run on the MediaTek SoC except the Xolo Play that runs on the Tegra 3 chipset and the Karbonn S9 Titanium and the S5 Titanium that runs on Qualcomm chipsets.
We have tested quite a few of these smartphones and here is a look at how they performed in the benchmark tests.
As you can see from the above benchmarks, almost all the scores are at par with one another. Variation may come in the case of the Xolo Play and the Karbonn S5 since these two devices don’t run on the MediaTek SoC. The S5 runs on Qualcomm and the Play on the Tegra 3 SoC.
So, if the performances are homogenous along with the specifications, then what is the distinguishing feature of the smartphone? What is your motivation for picking one over the other? Well, to start with, the brand name and the after sales service. This is very subjective and based on a user’s experience with a particular brand. It will vary from person to person. The second reason is the preloaded apps that come with the smartphone. Spice gives its users cloud storage along with some preloaded security apps along with the Stellar Pinnacle Pro, and the camera performs well. The Canvas HD and the Canvas 4 gives user preloaded local content via the M!Store. The Canvas 4 also comes with a slew of gesture-based features, as does the Lava Iris 504Q, though its are a little more gimmicky. If gaming is a primary need for you then you can consider the Xolo Play. If a simple raw Android experience is what you are after then the Zen Ultrafone 701 HD and the Xolo Q1000 are your weapons of choice.
