LG to update Google TV with latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS

SEOUL,S. KOREA: LG Electronics (LG) has announced that its Google TVs will be updated with the latest version of the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system. Available in the third quarter, the update will enable customers to enjoy more applications, including games that provide a greater level of interactivity and advanced graphics.

LG is showcasing its Google TV with the new operating system at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco this week.

In addition to boosting overall performance, the latest Jelly Bean update supports the Android Native Development Kit (NDK) so Google TV owners can have the widest, most diverse selection of apps to choose from. Smartphone apps designed using the NDK will run on Google TV with little to no modifications. With NDK compatibility, users can now play more games on a bigger LG Google TV screen. This level of compatibility makes it easier for developers to enter the burgeoning Smart TV app market.

"LG's Google TV with the latest Jelly Bean operating system and NDK support will deliver an enhanced user experience and access to more great apps," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of the LG Home Entertainment Company. "In addition to enabling users to enjoy advanced Android apps, the latest OS will also provide developers with new opportunities in the Smart TV arena."

Users will also benefit from LG's exceptional remote control options, which will make it easier to interact with the vast amount of content available on LG Google TV. In addition to the intuitive functionality of its Magic Remote Qwerty, LG will introduce a free remote control app that can turn any Android smartphone or tablet into a two-handed, touch-sensitive game controller. LG's new controller app is the ideal control solution for the large number of interactive games set to arrive on the upgraded Google TV platform as it provides a level of control necessary to play more complex games such as football and racing simulations.

The latest update will also include LG's patented 3D Game Changer, bringing a dimension to interactive games never seen before. 3D Game Changer produces a fully immersive effect by displaying 2D games in enhanced 3D mode, for an effect previously available only in movies filmed with 3D equipment.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will be available asan over-the-air (OTA) download for existing LG Google TVs in the United States starting in the third quarter.

Facebook no longer interesting as it's not 'parent-free': Teens

A survey, conducted by Pew Research Center, indicates how teenagers' enthusiasm for Facebook is diminishing

WASHINGTON, USA: The interest of teenagers is moving away from social networking platform Facebook, and they prefer "parent-free" platforms, according to a survey.
The survey, conducted by Pew Research Center, indicates how teenagers' enthusiasm for Facebook is diminishing. The authors of the Pew report wrote how Facebook is now a "social burden" for teenaged users.

"While Facebook is still deeply integrated in teens' everyday lives, it is sometimes seen as a utility and an obligation rather than an exciting new platform that teens can claim as their own," huffingtonpost.com quoted one of the authors.
Teens are flocking to Twitter and Instagram, which they say offer a "parent-free place" where they can better express themselves.

Will Nokia Asha 501 fail to woo customers?

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Touted as a stunning device with Asha platform, extended battery life and seamless Web 2.0 experience, the $99 ( Rs 5,350) Nokia Asha 501 feature phone has seemingly fallen short of expectations.

It is believed to be squarely aimed at third-world countries such as Indonesia, India and Brazil.
As Nokia unveils the new device with much fanfare, CNET believes that it wouldn't appeal to consumers who are accustomed to a more refined smartphone experience.

Tuvuti, in its review, however, feels that app store isn't as big as that of Android. Browsing Web and downloading apps on Asha 501 requires patience, it quipped.

Ironically, Nokia Asha 501 does not run on 3G networks that would lead consumers to breathlessly wait to get their tweets or view even Facebook snaps.

With an eye on growing data consumption in emerging economies, the Finnish firm has designed Asha 501 with varied features for Internet savvy-users. Fastlane allows a look into recently used apps, while corner box displays kilobytes of download. But, all these have 2G speed constraint.
The Nokia Asha platform, though, is not scary, but not smooth either. Average consumers, are yet to get accustomed with it, while Android-based mobility devices are readily available in the market and that, too, well below $99.

With 320x240-pixel resolution (low density) and LCD display, the newly-launched Asha 501 may not conform to high-quality video content standards. The device also was found lacking in multi-tasking capabilities, which are being offered by many of its competitors.

Business&Market founder-analyst, Deepak Kumar, believes that Nokia Asha 501 is clearly targeted at the budget youth buyers, who would be happy to have access to popular apps and the Internet. "The device lacks 3G support, but then that also helps achieve the longer battery life," added Kumar.
Nokia India did not respond to CIOL queries, despite reminders. The company has also declined to share the number of Asha 501 units it pre-booked during the first week, after launch

Court asks FB, others queries on online exploitation

The Delhi High Court Wednesday asked Facebook and other social networking sites how Indian children could be prevented from knowingly or unknowingly getting exploited by adults online.
A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Vibhu Bakhru said that in the US the rights of the children were protected by Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) but what about the children in India?
"Like the American children are protected how do you protect Indian children?" asked the bench from counsel appearing for Facebook.
"What will the Facebook do if a child is exploited online? Like American children, how do you protect the rights of Indian children," it added.
"What we are worried about is children who have been part of the social network and some adults misleading them and taking advantage. We are also concern about the use of their data by the adults for their advantage," the court said.
It directed social networking sites Facebook Inc and Google Inc to submit suggestions with regard to safety measures on the online usage of sites by children/minors in India within four weeks and posted the matter for July 16.
"The counsel for Facebook Inc and Google Inc will file suggestions regarding the online media sites used by the minors in India and how their rights could be protected within four weeks," the bench said.
The court was hearing a plea that children below 18 years were allowed to open an account with social networking sites including Facebook which was illegal as Indian laws didn't permit it.

HTC senior execs on mass exodus mode, albeit one at a time

The Taiwanese smartphone-maker is struggling to stem the outflow of its top management, even as the sales of its HTC One X is picking up

BANGALORE, INDIA: The launch of HTC One X seems to have signalled exit to many senior executives of the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer, so to speak, though not as a direct consequence.

Let's clear the air confirming that the latest flagship model from HTC, One X, has picked up sales volumes, despite having had a sluggish start and is not the bone of contention for the leadership team exploring greener pastures.

Now, to the exodus part. It all, apparently, started with senior vice-president of Global Marketing, Greg Fisher, leaving the company to Amazon a few months ago. Now, it is being reported that several other senior executives from the product and marketing departments of the company.

The Verge reported on Tuesday that HTC's chief product officer, Kouji Kodera, had left the company as of last week, "which is a considerable staff shift given that Kodera probably spearheaded HTC's recent line of critically well-received devices, including the HTC One X and this year's HTC One."
Apparently, the company is facing a lot of internal turmoil and politics, which is frustrating employees across the board.

Over the past three months, Global Communications vice-president Jason Gordon, Global Retail Marketing manager Rebecca Rowland, Digital Marketing chief John Starkweather and Eric Lin, manager of Product Strategy have quit HTC.
On Wednesay, HTC Asia CEO Lennard Hoornik confirmed exiting the company, and Elizabeth Griffin, head of Global Digital Service for the smartphone maker also reportedly might switch to Nintendo, said TechCrunch.

"This sizeable outpouring of talent comes at a crucial juncture for HTC, as it has just launched the HTC One, a flagship that CEO Peter Chou has literally staked his job upon. Chou so far seems to be secure in his position at the company, but if this trend of executive departures, he could soon wind up on his own at the top. Chou is apparently not the man people would like to have in charge, however, as The Verge reports that he and his tendency to make snap decisions are behind this outbound tide of senior staff," it added.

Though Microsoft claims to have sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses since its launch in 2012, it has come under criticism from users for its new features like doing away with the start button and use of two competing interfaces.

Shashi Tharoor: Global tender will expedite Aakash tablet delivery

shashi That apart, tech-savvy HRD minister speaks on freedom of speech, India's growth, FDI and more in this exclusive interview

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Shashi Tharoor needs no introduction. An author, columnist, diplomat and social activist, he headed UNHCR and worked as the Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations. As a strong contender for the coveted UN Secretary-General office, he finished second to Ban Ki-moon in 2007. One of the Tweeples' favorites, he has close to 2 milllion followers. He is an MP from Kerala and the Minister of State for HRD. In a conversation with CIOL, Tharoor speaks on delivery of 220 million low-cost Aakash tablets, the Section 66A of the IT Act 2008 and India's growth, among others.

CIOL: Low-cost Aakash tablet is one of the ambitious projects of HRD ministry. Despite this, the availability is worrisome. Please share an update and roadmap for the delivery of 220 million tablets.

Shashi Tharoor: The National Mission on Education through ICT (NME-ICT) was launched by the Union Ministry of HRD in February 2009 with a focus on availability of low-cost computing devices to bridge the digital divide. Delivery of low-effective Aakash tablet to India's 220 million school children remains our key ambition.
There might be issues related to availability and specification, but once global tender is rolled out, the delivery of Aakash tablets would be fast-forwarded. By 2014, a substantial number of these tablets will be delivered to schoolchildren.

CIOL: Social networks are being extensively used to vent ire against politicians and celebrities. People argue that it's freedom of speech and it shouldn't be curbed. Please share your thought.

Shashi Tharoor: Internet- especially social platforms provided by Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Twitter are becoming household names today. Raising a legitimate concern is no crime, but the Internet should not be exploited for destructive purposes that include cyber bullying, impersonation and blasphemy.
There should be a fine line between freedom of speech and hate content. Since social networks are getting pervasive, and while ensuring national security, their abuse is an area that should be looked at not merely by the government but by the civil society at large.

CIOL: There have been many debates on the Section 66A of the Indian IT Act 2008. Do you feel that the law does not deal with realistic restrictions and it needs to be revisited?

Shashi Tharoor: The Section 66A of the IT Act 2008 gives legal impetus to law enforcement agencies and empowers them to take action against anyone circulating illegal or offensive e-messages that could cause insult, enmity, hatred or criminal intimidation. There might be two views on it, but a reasonable restriction should be applied reasonably. The government has already issued guidelines to prevent its misuse.

CIOL: Today, Internet, especially Web 2.0, has been adopted by many large corporate and political parties. BJP has been leveraging it extensively too. Do you feel that Congress lacks full-fledged Internet campaign? Shouldn't Congress adopt it in 2014 general election?

Shashi Tharoor: As Internet penetration accelerates, its adoption has become imperative. We are leveraging social media strategies in a careful manner. Party Vice President Rahul Gandhi has also recently talked on increasing our efforts in this direction. We intend to track social networks aggressively and create campaigns around them. Based on Web feedback, we could plan out future strategies.

CIOL: The US trade groups have recently raised concerns over the Indian tax laws, investment climate and more importantly the policy that allows preferential market access to indigenous manufacturers. Are these concerns impacting FDI in India primarily in sectors such as telecom, IT/ITes and BFSI?

Shashi Tharoor: There has been a continuous dialogue process between the international trade bodies and the Union Government. India's growth story is unhampered by any external factor, and there is no gloom at FDI front. We'll soon be back on track with 8-9 per cent growth.
Preferential Market Access (PMA) guidelines are fully-WTO compliant and facilitate indigenous manufacturers and domestic industry as well as create immense job opportunities, IP creation and R&D activities domestically.

Samsung explains that implementation of a 5G cellular network requires a broad band of frequencies, unlike millimeter-wave bands, which had limitations in transmitting data over long distances due to its unfavorable propagation characteristics.

Samsung's new adaptive array transceiver technology can transmits data in millimeter-wave band at a frequency of 28 GHz at a speed of up to 1.056 Gbps to a distance of up to 2 kilometers.

"The adaptive array transceiver technology, using 64 antenna elements, can be a viable solution for overcoming the radio propagation loss at millimeter-wave bands, much higher than the conventional frequency bands ranging from several hundred MHz to several GHz,".

Now subscriptions will cost to You on YouTube?

Forrester analyst spells out its strategy guess. Will YouTube's subscription model undercut its ad model in an echo of the infamous paywall problem that has bedeviled online newspapers as they shifted from ad-supported to paid?
SINGAPORE: YouTube finally announced that it would allow channels to charge monthly fees to access content on YouTube and Forrester analyst James McQuivey explains in his latest blog post how YouTube is basically making a grab for more of everything that matters: More business options, more content partners, more satisfying customer experiences and most importantly, more minutes of our time.

He opines that some have predicted that YouTube's subscription model would undercut its ad model in an echo of the infamous paywall problem that has bedeviled online newspapers as they shifted from ad-supported to paid. "Others have suggested this shows that YouTube is up against an advertising wall of their own making -- advertisers will only pay so much to advertise against this amateur and semi-pro content (and to be fair I am in this camp even though I don't think this fact is dire). While still others gleefully wait to watch as YouTube learns how hard it is to get people to pay for things online." he writes.

In fact, all three of these things are minor asides in YouTube's decision-making, as he sees it. Instead of reacting to these and other constraints, YouTube is pro-acting on imminent opportunity. YouTube is basically making a grab for more of everything that matters, he suggests.
That's where he unveils the area of more business model options. TV is both ad supported and subscription supported and that works just fine, he argues. It gives people like HBO the creative flexibility to generate content advertisers may not be ready for and it gives companies like Scripps the freedom to promise more home-focused entertainment that home-focused advertisers care about. That flexibility is crucial to the ongoing success of those companies and it will be crucial to YouTube as well.

"Although in YouTube's, case, I would be surprised if the revenue balance in the one to two-year time-frame exceeded 10 per cent or 15 per cent subscription to advertising. More content partners. This is the best gotcha for YouTube. Remember when Viacom sued YouTube? And remember how other content providers refused to give YouTube content of any kind, some of them opting to enthusiastically back Hulu for a while as an alternative to strengthening YouTube? Now professional content providers that have stayed out of the YouTube fray are entering, creating channels like National Geographic Kids and Sesame Street. These companies aren't naïve entrants, either. They know how many millions of views they already get on YouTube and, like the music business that ultimately partnered with YouTube to create the online music video service Vevo, they want to monetize those views more effectively while simultaneously building a customer relationship with those views. YouTube smiles all the way to the bank, hand in hand with premium content partners."

He advises that in the long run, the YouTube experience needs to create a You Channel, content organized around you as a viewer. Before it can do that, it has to have the content you want and it has to be able to deliver that content on all the screens you have in a way that simplifies the infinite-seeming array of YouTube videos into a compact, satisfying viewer experience.

"If, by getting people to pay for even a fraction of what they watch on YouTube, the company convinces us that the content it delivers is more important than we realized (funny thing about paying for something, you feel you should use it), then it wins. It does so by getting us to watch even five more minutes a day, five minutes that come from somewhere else in our lives whether it's Cut the Rope or HBO or quality family time. YouTube doesn't care where it comes from, it just wants more of it. And the flexible subscription model, pushed by each of its content partners at their own discretion is precisely the way to reach for it."

New Android boss hasn't seen Galaxy S4's eye-tracking feature!

BANGALORE, INDIA: The eye-tracking feature in Samsung's Android-based new Galaxy S4 smartphone may be one of the much talked about features, but Sundar Pichai, the new Android head, says he is yet to experience it!

In his first interview to Wired after taking over as the new Android boss, Sundar Pichai was quoted saying, "I actually never used it. Look, Samsung plays a critical role in helping Android be successful. To ship great experiences, you need hardware and software together. The relationship is very strong on a day-to-day basis and on a tactical basis. So, I'm not that concerned. Historically, the industry has had long stable structures. Look at Microsoft and Intel. They were very codependent on one another, but it served both of them well."
sundarpichaiThe Android boss adds there is a need for new innovations in displays, in batteries. Samsung is a world leader in those technologies.
Android updates
To a query on complaints regarding Android's update process, Pichai says, "We are thinking about how to make Android handle updates better. We see ways we can do this. It's early days. We're talking with our partners and working our way through it. We need time to figure out the mechanics, but it's definitely an area of focus for me and for the team."

How Apple's iPhone can beat Android phones

Apple Inc will need to launch a larger iPhone to compete with large-screen models from handset makers running Google Inc's Android platform, market researcher Canalys said.

Smartphone shipments totaled 216.3 million during the first three months of the year, showing a year-on-year growth of 47.9 percent, Canalys said in a report on Thursday.

Android handsets accounted for 75.6 percent of total smartphone shipments, while South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co increased its shipments by 64.3 percent year-on-year to maintain its dominance in the market with a 32 percent share, the report said.

By contrast, Apple saw modest annual growth of 6.7 percent in smartphone shipments during the first quarter - the lowest level since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007.

"Despite its slowing growth, Apple still shipped over 37 million iPhones," Canalys prinicipal analyst Pete Cunningham said. "But HTC Corp and Samsung have raised the bar with their latest handsets, and Apple needs to respond with its next iPhone."

The analyst was referring to Taoyuan-based HTC's 4.7-inch HTC One and Samsung's 4.99-inch Galaxy S4, both of which are equipped with a full-high-definition 1080pixel display.
The current iPhone 5 features a smaller 4-inch screen.

Cunningham said the iPhone's user interface "is now six years old and badly in need of a refresh," while Apple also faces "the dilemma" of deciding the size of the display on its next iPhone.

"It cannot afford to ignore the trend for larger displays in premium smartphones. We expect an increase on the iPhone 5's 4-inch display, but are not anticipating a ‘Phablet'-style iPhone," he said.

A phablet is defined by Transparency Market Research, a global market intelligence company, as a handset that has a screen of between 5 and 7 inches and features a 1-gigahertz or faster processor.

LG Nexus 4 glass prone to cracks?

Source: Android Central Forums
Users have taken to online forums and shared their experience on how their LG Nexus 4 glass cracked within few days of use
NEW DELHI, INDIA: While consumers in India wait eagerly for the launch of the LG Nexus 4 in the country, a Nexus 4 user wrote in to CIOL about his experience with the smartphone.
According to him, the LG Nexus 4 is apparently too fragile. ''Accidently the phone fell just about a feet over and I broke the glass.. now its not working. I Googled about the glass and it is same all over.. the glass is terrible.. it breaks easily.. now have to invest 10k more on that,'' says Manpreet (comment moderated for the sake of clarity).
The story is not unique to Manpreet. Several users have taken to public forums to share their experience on the same problem. ''I just bought a google nexus 4 this past month and have had all the google phones prior to it. It dropped one time from a foot off the ground and the screen is cracked and will not respond to touch at all. Both google and LG are passing the buck to the other and will not back up their product,'' says a user on the AndroidCentral Forum.
lg-nexus-4-screen-breakAlthough this user has got responses from several others who agree with him, there are many who blame him for complaining on the matter as he did actually drop the smartphone. ''You dropped it and how can you expect others to take responsibility for this?,'' says a another user responding to the post.
However, some users claim that they broke their LG Nexus 4 without even dropping it. ''I only had my N4 for 3 days and I always have my N4 beside my on my table. And today I placed it there as always and some time later I noticed a crack going horizontally right above the Nexus logo. C'mon I didn't even drop it, I just placed it on my table,'' says a user on YouTube, who posted the comment in response to a video on ''Nexus 4 cracked back glass cover''.
Similarly, another user claims on AndroidCentral Forum that she cracked her LG Nexus 4 within 24 hours by just placing it on the kitchen counter. She has also posted pictures to support her claims. However, many readers have responded to her post saying that it is false.
Even the page on Wikipedia that provides information on the LG Nexus 4 says that ''The phone's front and back glass tend to break easily with the back glass breaking around the speaker.''
There are also several rumors doing the rounds on the Web, which claim that an updated LG Nexus 4 may be unveiled soon. The latest version of LG Nexus 4 will reportedly be an improved version of its predecessor and will have fixed all the features for which it was criticised.
That said, apart from these issues. the LG Nexus 4 has got rave reviews from critics and consumers. However, how has your experience with the LG Nexus 4 been? Do you believe that the glass of LG Nexus 4 is prone to cracking? Or should any smartphone for that matter be treated with care? Do let us know.

Google shuts down SMS Search service

Google's SMS Search helped users to get results on queries by just sending a text message
BANGALORE, INDIA: In a clandestine move, Google has apparently decided to bring the curtains down on its SMS-based search service.
The issue cropped up towards the end of last week - either on Thursday or Friday - and reportedly some users of the service got a message, stating: "SMS search has been shutdown. You can continue to search the web at google.com on any device."
Subsequently, the SMS Search page returned an error, though the home page continued to stay up and live.
Google's SMS Search helped users to get search results on queries including currency conversions, weather and local listings, by just sending a text message to 466453. They would, in turn, get their results in an SMS from Google. So, basically it was of great help to users without any smart devices or data package subscriptions, and basic phones.
TechCrunch reports that Google's other SMS products that let you check your calendar, update your Blogger blog, check your Gmail, and send and receive SMS text messages through Google Voice, appeared to still be working; but users will inevitably start wondering, if these will be next on the chopping block.
By Friday, it was a hot topic of discussion on Google's Product Forums, with many disgruntled users venting out their ire over no prior notice or warning from the search giant.
It prompted presumably Google employee, Jessica S, to come up with a clarification:
Hi everyone,
Closing products always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users. Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people's lives.
Thanks,
Jess
But whether it is going to pacify the unhappy users or not is not clear yet. It might be remembered that Google announced in March that it would shut down Google Reader as of July 1.

Social, mobile, cloud: Will India miss the bus?

India has the potential to lead the world in the nexus of social, mobile, cloud information but may waste the opportunity, says Gartner

BANGALORE, INDIA: India has the potential to lead the world in the adoption of nexus of forces, which is the convergence and mutual reinforcement of social interaction, mobility, cloud and information. However, for this to happen a number of technological and socioeconomic shifts must happen, according to Gartner.

The manner in which IT is used, developed and managed will change significantly, because of the nexus of forces, and the technologies that sit behind them. These pivotal technologies include the explosive use of media tablets, mobile applications, context-aware computing, the Internet of things, next-generation analytics and in-memory computing (IMC).

"However, for this to occur, new infrastructure will have to replace the old; new types of servers, networks and even data centers will have to be rolled out," said Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner. "A cash rich consumer base is required that is able to demand and take advantage of social, mobile and context-aware applications. Furthermore, established ways of behaving in education, shopping, banking, etc., will have to morph to take advantage of new technologies."

Transformation of this nature is expensive and time-consuming. The economic, demographic and social outlook for western economies suggests that, for the next few years, such changes will be difficult to achieve. At first glance, India seems to be well-placed to embrace these changes - it has virtually no legacy systems, billions of dollars are being spent on developing new infrastructure, a wealthy, a well-educated middle class hungry for change, and the country is pivotal in the digital supply chain.

Therefore, Gartner analysts said the question of whether India will be the first place to see the emergence of this new computing scenario is important.

"Based on current forecasts, India will become one of the world's biggest consumer economies during the next five years. India will have more than 1 billion mobile subscribers by 2014. India will see a significant roll-out of new IT infrastructure during the next five years in both the public and private sectors," said Kumar.

Given the economic and demographic statistics, the improving levels of literacy and the large consumer base, India should be ideally positioned to take advantage of the Nexus of Forces. Entrepreneurs in region, such as Bangalore and Mumbai, should be able to create products that link these technologies together.

"While there are significant opportunities in India to lead in the Nexus of Forces, contrary forces are also at play. The uptake of social media remains quite low. There is a degree of ambivalence toward the use of social media for marketing by Indian retailers," said Kumar.

"Although it's easy to see how social media could grow rapidly during the next few years, privacy concerns and the cultural fabric of the country may suggest otherwise. Indians are, by nature, private people, focusing more family than on other, large social groups. If the use of social media does not reach a substantial proportion of that young, affluent consumer base, then the benefits of the Nexus of Forces may not fully materialize."

A second factor is the skepticism toward the cloud. Indian IT users feel that the public cloud remains immature for enterprise use. The major concerns reflect the ones that Gartner sees worldwide, namely, security, data retention and the maturity of the offerings. One specific issue is the belief that the underlying financial constructs of public cloud services do not add up.

"Many people feel that it would be difficult for public cloud operators to provide enterprise services that are lower than their internal costs. This view reflects the fact that most people still view the public cloud as a software as a service (SaaS) model, rather than infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or the platform as a service (PaaS) model.

This carries complex financial and technical permutations in areas such as patch compatibility, testing of new applications and contract management," Mr. Kumar said.
