BANGALORE, INDIA: Now, it's all final. Microsoft's
Windows 8 update will be called Windows 8.1 and not Windows Blue as had
been referred earlier. It will be unvelied on June 26. Most importantly,
it will be a free update to Windows 8 for consumers through the Windows
Store.
That was confirmed by Tami Reller,
Microsoft's Chief Marketing Officer, at the JP Morgan Technology, Media
& Telecom Conference in Boston. In a follow-up post on Blogging
Windows, Brandon LeBlanc wrote: "We will also be making a public preview
of Windows 8.1 available starting on June 26, timed with the Build
developer conference in San Francisco. The preview will be available for
Windows 8 and Windows RT."
There are over 70,000 apps in the Windows Store (the online app store
for Windows) - apps such as Twitter, eBay, Netflix, CNN and games like
Temple Run.
Tami also said: "We've also seen the number of certified devices for
Windows 8 and Window RT triple to 2,400 and we're seeing more and more
touch devices come to retail."
Though Microsoft claims to have sold 100 million Windows 8 licenses
since its launch in 2012, it has come under criticism from users for its
new features like doing away with the start button and use of two
competing interfaces.
