Intel unveils fourth generation Haswell processors

Fourth generation processors delivers a 50 per cent increase in battery life in active workloads over the previous generation


BANGALORE, INDIA: Intel Corporation introduced its fourth generation Intel Core processors that serve as foundation to wave of new 2-in-1s that combines PC performance with tablet-like mobility in one device and deliver on Ultrabook vision.


According to Intel, The 4th generation Intel Core processors are designed from the ground up for the Ultrabook and serve as the foundation for a new era of 2-in-1 computing.


Kirk Skaugen, senior vice-president and general manager of Intel's PC Client Group, said, "Intel has more than 50 different 2-in-1 designs in the pipeline across a range of price points, including premium Ultrabook 2-in-1s powered by the new Intel Core processors, and other designs powered by forthcoming processors based on the company's 22nm Silvermont microarchitecture."


Designed first and foremost with the Ultrabook in mind and based on the company's 22nm Haswell microarchitecture, the company claims that the 4th generation Intel Core processors deliver a 50 per cent increase in battery life in active workloads over the previous generation.


This is the largest generation-over-generation gain in the company's history, equating to over 9 hours of battery life in active workloads for some Ultrabooks based on the new processors, said Intel.
Intel further added that systems based on the quad-core version of the new Core processors are available now, with additional versions available in the coming months.


Some of the features of fourth generation Intel Core processors include built-in graphics that deliver discrete-level performance, or up to two times the performance of Intel's prior generation and Intel Iris graphics for eye-popping visual experiences.


Looking to the future, Skaugen said Intel is working on an integrated solution to build 3-D depth camera technology directly into future Intel-based devices targeted for the second half of 2014.
